Some coworkers (who aren't real gamers) are arguing over what the best selling game has been (within the last few years). I thought it was Halo2 is it? One thinks it's San Andreas.

This discounts Mario and the older games.

That depends. Pokemon Ruby/Sapphire outsold San Andreas on the PS2, but maybe not on the PS2/Xbox combo. Dragon Quest sells ridiculous amounts in Japan. Halo 2 sold 2.4 million copies on its first day.

But if I had to put money on it, I'd predict San Andreas' PC/PS2/Xbox combo.

I found out that it depends on what you are searching for. Worldwide: Halo 2, America: GTA, online games: WoW, first day: Halo 2. Then you can go further with most played, first week, first year, bought after first release, per console/pc, etc.

Yeah, but there's still a surprising gap between games the first four Marios (1, 2, 3, and Land on the GB) and Tetris compared to everything else since.

Well, I don't think there've been many sales of the original Tetris Gameboy game, but they were just the undeniable "I MUST HAVE THEM" games from when the consoles first came out.

I am gonna have to go with my plethora of knowledge here...............Ummmmmm....I will say that it is kind of a tossup between Halo 2 and GTA series......Furthermore, if they broke it down into age groups, i'd say Halo 2 has a significant edge with the older crowd

Guinness Book of World Records lists Super Mario Bros. for NES as the best selling game of all time at over 40 million units. This includes the fact that it was sold as a bundle with the system. Best selling series is, of course the Mario Bros. series at over 180 million units.

Best selling PC game is The Sims with over 8 million sold and over 24 million including expansion packs.

Also, games such as Minesweeper, Solitaire, etc. which come with Windows, are not counted. These games are present on over 200 million computers.

Edit: Tetris for Gameboy has sold 33 million units.

These topics are really bringing back the memories. I used to love playing Super Mario Bros. on my little 13" TV. I can't remember if it was B&W. Now days, little kids would curse you out if you gave them a TV that small.

It's amazing that probably more than any other game, the SMB's gameplay has withstood the test of time. You could go back and play any of the 8, 16, & 64 bit games and still have just as much fun with them. Even though I'm not the biggest fan of Nintendo, I have to give it to them, they deserved to sell 40 million when you consider the incredible fun factor and the millions of people they made fall in love with gaming.

Yeah. The new and old Mario platforming games are still awesome. I still occasionally pick up my Mario Advance 2 and start playing the good ol' SNES classic. IMO, tied with Sonic 3 as the best game in that generation.

I actually have and use a crappy 13" TV....

I hate it so much...but love it....
