Hoy!

I'm taking up journalism. I've recently launched a news blog for geeks with a couple of my chums. We'll be covering science and tech news, as well as geeky entertainment news (sci-fi fantasy stuff), book/movie/tv reviews and news about gaming (video and table top).

The news service is called "live chicken" ( http://livechicken.blogspot.com )

I've also created a forum for readers ( http://livechicken.iforumer.com ) and I'm in need of names for ranks. Unfocused geek related names are best.

I have stuff like: erasable pen, pocket protector, glasses tape, Superman t-shirt, but I need more! I'm not totally adverse to going with names that relate to certain media (Dungeon Master, Starship Captain, Jedi Knight, etc. but I need these to be balanced).

Post some ideas, and don't forget to check out the blog, there's a review of Sci-Fi's new series, Eureka, up there now.

Wow, you say you're taking up journalism so casually ^_^;;

I feel your pain, Pocket--getting ideas is sometimes the hardest part about writing. I can't really suggest anything though... the only piece of news my brain has been stuck on recently (and its not even really new news XD) is that they're honestly and truly making a movie of Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials trilogy, the first movie being the Golden Compass. It's coming out in later 2007 (forget the exact date), but I'm excited already ^_^ If you haven't read those books yet, you realllllly should.

Good luck with the blog and writing and suchlike ^_^

I realize that I should probably clarify. My moving into journalism as a hobby is the result of my interpretation of a number of free career direction tests. Every time I would take one of those tests, creativity, writing and science were among my highest aptitudes. Since I don't have any scientific credentials, I can't exactly start practicing molecular biology in my basement and hope something good will come of it (more likely something monstrous and horrible will come of it, but, we'll see!). I decided that a good career for me would be a science writer. I have a considerable amount of lay-knowledge when it comes to science, and I'm a half-decent writer. I don't have any journalism training or experience, however, so I can't get a legit job yet. That's why I launched "live chicken". In a year's time, if I'm applying for a writing position at a magazine or something, instead of school credentials, I can show them all the articles I've written about science and other geek related things on the web.

I'd love it if all of you would stop by from time to time and read what's being written by me and the other contributors ( http://livechicken.blogspot.com ). Submit stories if you want to, I'm eager to fill the blog up! And don't forget to give a little time and attention to the related forum ( http://livechicken.iforumer.com ).

I will be reviewing a video game here and there, but I have no intention of becoming a gaming site. I don't wish to compete with MyGamer at all. I wish only to be a comprehensive news site for geeks. This community is good to me, and if anyone on the staff can think of ways that live chicken can help MyGamer and vice versa, I'd love to talk!
